If the game in question involves the Dodgers or White Sox in Glendale, leg out a grounder to Cuff for happy hour, when glasses of wine (including berry-forward Provisioner Red Blend from Cochise County, $5) and beers (Abbey’s Single from Chicago’s Destihl Brewery, $4) pour at discounted prices. Some prospects look great on paper, but ultimately fall short of expectations. Located not much farther than a long fly ball from Reds and Indians games at Goodyear Ballpark, Ground Control is a five-tool player that fulfills its promise. Ostensibly a coffee shop, it can do it all — sit-down meals, exciting beer and wine list and, yeah, a place to camp out with your laptop and slurp down coffee. During happy hour, lead off with a Grandpa’s Pils ($4), a slightly floral, straw-colored Czech-style pilsner from Glendale’s Dubina Brewing Co. After you’ve knocked out a trio of fluffy pretzel batons with beer cheese and spicy mustard ($7), reach for a rich, silky-smooth, nitro-tapped Velvet Yeti stout ($4) from Denver’s Great Divide Brewing Co. On deck: an order of the owner’s favorite dish, the melty, peppery Chips ’N’ Gravy poutine ($7). 4-6 p.m. M-Su.
If a baseball team was made up of Phoenix restaurants, Cornish Pasty would be the face of the franchise. Now with five locations across the Valley, the local mini-chain has been slugging out pasties – big, calzone-like British pastries filled with savory,
stew-y fillings – since 2005. You won’t find the pasties in the happy hour rotation here, but Cornish remains a great post-game destination for Giants fans in Old Town Scottsdale by virtue of the deals they will find: a cup of mushroom-walnut soup served with world-class, house-made white bread ($4.50); tandoori-style chicken wings ($6.75); and hardboiled Scotch eggs, covered with meat and bread crumbs before sliding into the fryer ($5.95). Drive them all home with a $4 Hoegaarden, a cloudy, banana-y Belgian wheat beer tinted by orange peel. 3-6 p.m. M-Su.
