Flo’s Unique Chinese Cuisine
15027 N. Thompson Peak Pkwy., Scottsdale 480-661-8883, madebyflo.com
While most people associate “Flo” with the smart-mouthed waitress of Mel’s Diner, Florence “Flo” Chan dishes up a far more delightful dining experience at her North Scottsdale bistro. Look for her smiling face among bustling servers in the large, contemporary dining room, dimly lit by square bamboo pendants hanging above sleek, dark wood tables.

All appetizers and brews, wine and signature cocktails are half-off at happy hour. Pair pan-fried pork or veggie potstickers ($2.50) with Flo’s house bloody Mary ($4.50), or get a taste of the islands with the coconut- and-pineapple-infused A-Flo-Ha ($4). Thai shrimp skewers ($4), barbecue pork ($3.50), and spicy calamari with chiles ($4.50) round out the more exotic offerings, while Chinese food purists can stick with $2 spring rolls or golden crab puffs ($3) washed down with a pomegranate margarita ($4.50). 3-7 p.m. daily.

Chino Bandido
1825 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler
480-889-5990, chinobandido.com
Maybe it was the eyebrow-raising combo of Chinese emerald chicken and quesadilla – or Chino’s sombrero-wearing panda mascot – that had Food Network host Guy Fieri grinning when he sampled the cross-cultural cuisine at this Valley institution.

Plastic banquet tables and foil plates make Chino best for a quick group experience, though the newly added happy hour with $6 PBR buckets ($8 for other domestics) encourages guests to stay a while. Score cheap chips ($3 with salsa or $5 with guacamole) washed down with $10 buckets of Corona, Dos Equis or Tsing Tao. Staples of the eatery’s fun mix-and-match menu are also found in the appetizer deals: Enjoy flavorful, moist machaca atop crisp black bean nachos or spice things up with saucy jade red chicken wings ($5). 3-6 p.m. daily.

Autumn Court
3752 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix
602-234-0512, autumncourt.com
Though Autumn Court’s funky peaked-roof digs burned in 2005, the relocated restaurant retains some of the original’s vintage charm. Creaky wooden furnishings and dusty canning jars have been replaced by knotty pine plank walls and faux greenery, and the once Chinese-only menu has expanded to include sushi and other Asian specialties.

Grab a pleather stool at the center bar and enjoy $4 yellowtail or tuna nigiri washed down with a sweet lychee martini, classic Mai Tai or Singapore Sling ($5 each). Standard rolls such as spicy salmon or California are a budget-stretching $4, with fresh sashimi specials ranging from $8-$10. Score a dollar off small sake bottles, wines by the glass and bottled brews, the perfect complement to heartier fried crab pulls ($3), orders of crispy chicken wings or potstickers ($4 each). 3-7 p.m. daily.
