Bonus Round
24 W. Camelback Rd., Phoenix
602-374-6936, bonusroundphx.com
There are stranger things than arcades with well-stocked bars. Like alien invaders, for one. Or ninjas fighting cyborgs. Or 720-degree spinning slam dunks. But those, too, exist at Bonus Round, where classic arcade games such as Galaga, Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam coexist with a sophisticated craft beer and cocktail program, along with game-themed grub. During happy hour, all draft beers and specialty cocktails get knocked down by a buck, sometimes two – perfect if you happen to be gunning for the high score on Deer Hunter. Try anything from Bell’s Brewery or give the Golden Gun cocktail ($9) a go: Japanese whiskey and Montenegro amaro mixed with pineapple; business up front, party on the finish. Be careful where you fist pump – it’s no Super Mario mushroom, but the happy hour grilled cheese ($4.99) is a gamer-fueling mix of gouda and Havarti on toasty sourdough, and it comes with crispy tater tots.
4-6 p.m. Tu- Su; all day M.

The Little Woody
4228 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix
602-955-0339, littlewoodyaz.com
A self-proclaimed “happy hour bar,” The Little Woody is a dive-y second home to those looking to take the edge off... along with a little of their tab. During happy hour, all domestic brews – including the silky smooth and unfiltered White Ale from Four Peaks – and wines by the glass are $1 off. The food is offered at a fixed price, happy hour or not, but since you’ve saved a couple of dollars on drinks, get the shareable guacamole and chips ($8) or – if you crave a second breakfast – the rustic waffle bites with cinnamon-infused, cream cheese-like mascarpone and vanilla bourbon syrup ($7). Drink in hand? Take it to the side room, where the term “arcade bar” gets back to its analog roots, with true classics like skee-ball, foosball, darts and shuffleboard.
4-7 p.m. daily.

Modern Round
8320 W. Mariners Way, Peoria
623-388-6900, modernround.com
Least conventional among our arcade bars is Peoria’s Modern Round, the gun-lover’s answer to TopGolf. They invite you and a group of friends to “get trigger-happy” with virtual screens depicting everything from duck hunting (the clack clack clack of the guns will be familiar to any gamer who grew up in the ‘80s) to a zombie apocalypse. Your weapon: an automatic rifle plucked from a virtual armory. And because simulated target practice lifts your heart rate well above that of the undead, try fueling up with “frickles” ($6) – fried pickles fully loaded with caper-spiked Sriracha sauce – or the herb-laden wild mushroom flatbread, with melty, tangy fontina cheese ($10). Since the specialty cocktails are discounted, order the chocolate martini ($7) for dessert. You’ll find Grey Goose, Baileys and crème de cacao are even more lethal when equipped with an Oreo crumb rim. 3-6 p.m. M-F.
