Ramble On

With fresh blackberries, banana liqueur and fresh ginger, the Ramble On alludes to Led Zeppelin and goes down easy.

photo by Rob Ballard“Eat your vegetables and drink your fruit.” OK, maybe that’s not a real mom-ism, but it will strike you as a splendid idea once you taste the magenta-tinted, tart-sweet Ramble On at Crudo, a vaguely dessert-like little number that alludes to Led Zeppelin and a traditional light spring cocktail called the Bramble in the same boozy breath. Whereas the ’80s-era Bramble is made with blackberry liqueur called crème de mûre, the more complex Ramble On uses fresh blackberries and banana liqueur for a fruit-in-the-bowl experience sharpened by the bite of fresh ginger. One caveat: It goes down absurdly easily, but hey, it’s spring, and now’s the time, the time is now.

To make this slurpalicious libation at home, muddle three fresh blackberries in a cocktail shaker, then add 1 ½ oz. Mission vodka, ½ oz. Giffard banana liqueur, ¾ oz. fresh lime juice, ¼  oz. ginger syrup* and ½ oz. simple syrup. Add ice, shake and fine-strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with a blackberry and a lime wheel or wide-cut twist.

*Mix 1 cup peeled, chopped fresh ginger, 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 5-10 minutes. Let cool to room temperature and strain out solids.
