Despite what World War Z and The Walking Dead purport, it doesn’t take a virus to turn humans into zombies. Have a few too many cocktails on a Saturday night and by morning, you’re dead to the world.

Civil War-era drink masters created the Corpse Reviver as an “eye opener” to keep the hangover monster at bay. According to Second Story whiskey guru John Christie, two versions of the cocktail survived the Prohibition-era mixology purge – mainly due to their inclusion in the influential Savoy Cocktail Book, penned by trans-Atlantic spirit-slinger Harry Craddock.

Christie’s take on the classic gin Reviver begins with 1 oz. each Hayman’s Old Tom gin, Cointreau, Kina Lillet and lemon juice. Add one bar spoon of crème de violette and shake well. Serve straight up in a coupe glass garnished with an amarena cherry for a sugary tonic that’ll keep you wide-eyed all day long.
