December is a time for festive foods, family gatherings – and seasonal colds. Thankfully, a 2013 study at Oregon Health & Science University showed that moderate amounts of liquid intoxicants can boost the immune system.
Cold remedy or not, mixologist Shannon Krol’s Belmont Stakes will warm your belly with the spirits of the season. “It’s sweet, but not too sweet,” she says. “The flavors of orange, maple, cranberry and rye are all there, with rosemary at the nose.”
Krol starts by simmering cranberries and brown sugar with a cup of Crown Royal Maple until syrupy. Let sit overnight. Muddle sugar-coated cranberries and orange peel in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass. Top with 2 oz. Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye, 1 oz. of the homemade cranberry-maple syrup and two dashes of AZ Bitters Lab’s Figgy Pudding bitters. Stir and add ice. Garnish with a candied cranberry and rosemary sprig for added holiday cheer.
