Thankfully, no actual fugu puffer fish were harmed in the making of Ballast Point’s “Fugu” vodka – especially considering the poisonous puffer practically requires a Ph.D. to prepare it for eating. The spirit’s daunting name is just the San Diego-based craft brewery’s way of saying it takes equal skill to distill their vodka.
Tavern Americana infuses Fugu with hops to create their Ballast 31, a tart and tangy shandy that balances the malty flavor of light beer with refreshing citrus notes. Start with 1 ½ oz. of the infused vodka. Add 3 dashes grapefruit bitters and ½ oz. each lemon juice, simple syrup and Thatcher’s elderflower liqueur. Combine, shake and strain into a martini glass. Top with Ballast Point Brewing Company Grapefruit Sculpin IPA and garnish with lemon twist, then consume… if you dare!
