“Gingerbread is very popular throughout the Christmas season, but churros are something people love throughout the year,” says Tim Vasquez, Someburros president. “I thought we’d do our own spin on the gingerbread house and do it Mexican style.”
Swing by any of the Valley Someburros locations, and pick up a Churro Casita Kit for $13.50, which includes 15 prepackaged churros, step-by step instructions and a recipe for icing to hold your casita together.
When the Vasquez family conceived the churro casita idea, they thought it might take a while to catch on, but the kits are “flying off the shelves,” Vasquez says.
For an added incentive, casita builders are invited to upload photos of their creations to the Someburros Facebook page using #ChurroCasita for a chance to win free burritos for a year.
The churro casita doesn’t necessarily have to be a culinary masterpiece, Vasquez says, but judges are looking for something that’s “creative, homemade and Christmasy.”
For every churro kit purchased, Someburros will donate $1 to Toys for Tots.
Vasquez says his family has made their churro casita and invites his patrons to do the same. “And if we can put some special gifts under the tree for kids at the same time? That’s more than icing on the cake,” Vasquez says.
