Amuse Bouche
French/International
Surprise, Arizona - 17058 W. Bell Road, Ste. 104 - 623-322-8881 - $$-$$$-$$$$
In the tradition of the neighborhood bistro, Paris-trained husband-and-wife chefs Snir and Kierstin Mor turn out unpretentious, homey French fare of exceptional quality. The French onion soup is the real deal and the duck breast with demi-glace is magnifique, but it¹s their carefully crafted meatloaf that takes top prize. The restaurant is BYOB and charges $2 per glass used. 11 a.m.-3 p.m., M; 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.-8 p.m., T-Sa; 9 a.m.-2 p.m. amuse-bouche.biz
Kabab Palace
International
Tempe, Arizona - 710 W. Elliot Rd., Ste. 108 - 480-775-6288 - $$$
Sandwiched in between a salon and a Sonic in a Tempe strip mall, Kabab Palace may not boast the ultimate location, but what it lacks on the outside, it more than makes up for on the inside. Pretty, pristine and welcoming, Kabab Palace exudes the feel of a fine-dining restaurant, with glittering chandeliers, white linens and fresh flowers on each table. Owners Haroon Sherzai and Jalal Achakzai, who ran an Afghan restaurant in San Francisco for 16 years, serve up the Valley’s only Afghan cuisine – traditional, hearty food (think lots of lamb, Basmati rice and sautéed veggies). Cap off your perfect dinner with a potent Turkish coffee, prepared tableside. Lunch, 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., M-F; dinner, 5:30 p.m.-10 p.m,, daily
