Brisam’s
American
Carefree / Cave Creek, Arizona - 4730 E. Lone Mountain Rd., Cave Creek - 480-595-2202 - $$
Although the four mounted TVs say “sports bar,” this neighborhood restaurant caters to families, offering great burgers, peel-and-eat shrimp, fish tacos, loaded fries, and fish and chips. Lunch and dinner daily.
Café Bink
American
Scottsdale, Arizona - 36899 N. Tom Darlington Dr - 480-488-9796 - $$$
Serving simpler yet equally fabulous fare as its older sibling, Binkley’s, Carefree’s Café Bink is a gem all its own. It would not be out of place on the rue de Seine as far as the food and décor are concerned, although the American-dominated wine list would surely raise some eyebrows. The long, narrow space is stylish – a modern American interpretation of a Parisian bistro. Recommendations include the house smoked King salmon, cider-braised rabbit leg, and chocolate mousse. Lunch, Tu-Su, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; bar menu, 2 p.m.-5 p.m.; dinner, 5 p.m.-9 p.m.; closed Mondays
Cafe ZuZu
American/Contemporary American
Scottsdale, Arizona - 6850 E. Main St. (Hotel Valley Ho) - 480-248-2000 - $$$
This swingin’, earth-toned ode to the ’50s and ’60s effectively captures the look and mood of that era without going overboard. More Dino than Elvis-inspired, it specializes in the homemade foods of that era – meatloaf, mac & cheese, chicken and dumplings, and lemon meringue pie. The best dishes, however, are Chef Chuck Wiley’s modern creations on the appetizer list. Breakfast, lunch and dinner M-Sa, Sunday brunch.
Chelsea’s Kitchen
American
Phoenix, Arizona - 5040 N. 40th St. - 602-957-2555 - $$$
Perched on the north bank of the Arizona Canal, Chelsea’s is a comfortable neighborhood restaurant for the comfortably fixed families of Arcadia and Paradise Valley. The Arizona Roadhouse menu features stylish renditions of ceviche, fried chicken, short ribs and duck tacos. Dessert is a must. Dinner nightly.
