blu Sushi
Japanese/Sushi
Litchfield Park, Arizona - 118 Old Litchfield Rd - 623-535-4935 - $$$
While not quite yet a “destination” sushi joint to make people travel from afar, blu Sushi is a classy option for west-siders looking for a fun evening out. It has a modern yet relaxed vibe, full of dark wood, candles and an open feel, but with a cozy lounge section if you want to really chill. The place is in the heart of Litchfield Park across the street from the Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa. The owners also own the Wigwam Golf Course, but the businesses aren’t affiliated. Recommendations: Lobster tail roll; gold combination; Las Vegas roll; Golden Gate roll; “rock and roll.” 11 a.m.-10 p.m., daily (kitchen); bar open until at least 11 p.m., Th-Sa
Blue Wasabi Sushi & Martini Bar
Sushi
Scottsdale, Arizona - 20715 N. Pima Rd. - 480-538-5161 - $$$
A panel of black-edged squares and constantly changing color dominate the room at this small, exclusive sushi bar. The menu (even more hip than the décor) features sushi rolls filled with such surprising ingredients as seared beef, mango and Fritos. Great patio and gorgeous martinis. Lunch M-F, dinner nightly.
Hana Japanese Eatery
Japanese/Sushi
Phoenix, AZ - 5524 N. Seventh Ave - 602-973-1238 - $-$$-$$$
Family-owned and family-friendly, Hana captures the hearts, minds and bellies of locals who appreciate the warmth of the staff, the freshness of the fish (much of it bought whole and cut in house), and the authenticity of the traditional food. Expect to find sushi, bento, noodles, tempura, grilled fish and teppan-style meats and seafood.
Mikado
Japanese/Sushi
East Valley, Arizona - 3125 S. Alma School Rd., Chandler - 480-726-0255 - $$
Except for the imaginative maki-zushi, there’s nothing trendy about this cozy neighborhood Japanese restaurant and sushi bar, which offers oshibori and old-school hospitality. Good tempura and udon. Lunch and dinner M-Sa.
Pure Sushi
Japanese/Sushi
Scottsdale, AZ - 20567 N. Hayden Rd. - 480-355-0998 - $$-$$$
Although it’s attractive by day, Pure is a glowing fairyland by night, a huge draw for the mostly beautiful people who inhabit the place. Try specialty rolls such as the In & Out or the Creamy Baked Lobster as well as entrées such as sea bass with lemongrass-soy and sweet miso.
Ra
Sushi
Scottsdale, Arizona - 3815 N. Scottsdale Rd. - 480-990-9256 - $$$
Although these sexy-looking sushi bars possess traditional Japanese design elements, their menus and outlook are strictly modern. Besides sushi, there’s a full menu of Japanese and Japanese-inspired dishes. Lunch M-F, dinner nightly. Check the White Pages for other locations.
Sea Saw
Japanese/Sushi
Scottsdale, Arizona - 7133 E. Stetson Dr. - 480-481-9463 - $$$
Chef-owner Nobu Fukuda works his magic at this small, simple venue, where sushi and Japanese food are given a contemporary treatment. Consider the chilled edamame soup, shinshu mushi and tuna tataki with roasted beet purée. Dinner nightly.
Shimogamo
Japanese/Sushi
East Valley, Arizona - 2051 W. Warner Rd., Chandler - 480-899-7191 - $$$
Traditionalists and iconoclasts will both be happy at this serenely elegant Japanese restaurant, which offers everything from saikyo-yaki and chirashi-zushi to seafood wonton wraps and portobello beef rolls. Don’t miss the monkfish paté. Lunch and dinner M-Sa.
Stingray Sushi
Japanese/Sushi
Scottsdale, AZ - 4302 N. Scottsdale Rd - 480-941-4460 - $-$$$
Chic Stingray has already been discovered by the “in” crowd, which shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying the place, especially considering such amenities as oshibori and complimentary edamame at the sushi bar. Better yet, the fish is fresh, the maki-zushi are original and the noise level is downright pleasant before 10 p.m. Lunch and dinner daily.
Sushi Eye In Motion
Japanese/Sushi
East Valley, Arizona - 58 W. Buffalo St - 480-686-8183 - $$
Housed in an historic building in downtown Chandler, Sushi Eye is a great-looking modern space, but its most salient feature is the conveyor belt that runs the length of the extended sushi bar, trundling ready-made sushi and other Japanese treats to its customers. In Japan, kaitenzushi is of about the same quality as fast food, but here, it’s much better. The Korean owners also make great BBQ short ribs. Lunch and dinner M-S.
