Alchemy
Contemporary American
Scottsdale, Arizona - 13225 N. Eagle Ridge Dr., Fountain Hills (Copperwynd Resort) - 480-333-1880 - $$$
Ask for a table near the window because this pretty restaurant, decorated with art glass and lots of copper, offers fantastic views of the McDowells and Superstitions. The menu features daily pasta specials, steaks and pork tenderloin glazed with Tia Maria sauce. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
Arcadia Farms
Contemporary American
Scottsdale, Arizona - 7014 E. First Ave. - 480-941-5665 - $$
Cozy and cluttered, this ultra-feminine cottage is where everyone goes for the quintessential ladies lunch. Try the strawberry chicken salad or the yummy focaccia sandwich. Great location for private parties in the evening. Lunch daily. Reservations recommended. Other locations: Phoenix Art Museum (602-257-2191), Heard Museum (602-251-0204) and Desert Botanical Garden (480-481-8106)
Avalon
Contemporary American
Scottsdale, Arizona - 7707 E. McDowell Rd - 480-656-0010 - $$-$$$
Conveniently situated between downtown Scottsdale and Tempe, Avalon’s fresh cuisine concept is invigorating the scene with clean, bold, straightforward flavors. Executive chef Travis Watson trained with some of the world’s most notable chefs, including famed chef Jacque Paccard at the French eatery, Le Parisian. He crafted Avalon’s menu around local and regionally grown ingredients to the Western part of North America. Expect classy breakfast options – nothing that screams “diner” here – and tantalizing entrées at night.
Barcelona
Contemporary American/Southwestern
Scottsdale, Arizona - 15440 N. Greenway-Hayden Loop - 480-603-0370 - $$$
This hip, good-looking hot spot puts the “club” in “supper club,” offering live entertainment and Spanish-inspired, Southwestern-accented Contemporary American food until 10 p.m. nightly. After 10, Barcelona transforms into a disco, so put on your dancing shoes. Dinner daily.
Beaver Street Brewery
Contemporary American
Flagstaff, Arizona - 11 S. Beaver St. - 928-779-0079 - $$
I like everything about this place – from the name (which evokes trains and tiny towns) and the comfortable, old-timey décor to the hearty food and menu. Lunch and dinner daily, late-night menu.
Binkley’s Restaurant
French/Contemporary American
Carefree / Cave Creek, Arizona - 6920 E. Cave Creek Rd., Cave Creek - 480-437-1072 - $$$
Nobody expects a restaurant this charming (or this good) in Cave Creek, but there it is, dishing out fabulous French-inspired frog legs and roasted garlic soup, tuna tartare, lingcod with polenta and pea purée, duck confit pierogi and dozens of other fresh, seasonal, gorgeously presented creations. Dinner Tu-Sa.
Bloom
Contemporary American
Scottsdale, Arizona - 8877 N. Scottsdale Rd. - 480-922-5666 - $$$
Bright blue and invariably busy, Bloom features Contemporary American cooking and lots of great wines by the glass or bottle. Try the signature warm Maine lobster salad or grilled ahi with sesame-seed ponzu. Lunch M-Sa, dinner daily.
Bobby’s Restaurant and Jazz Lounge
Contemporary American/Italian
Scottsdale, Arizona - 7122 E. Greenway Pkwy - 480-556-0770 - $$$$
Bobby’s is where Tony Soprano would take “clients” for dinner and jazz in Scottsdale. The décor is Hollywood meets Vegas, the menu is retro Italian-American (clams casino, lobster ravioli, veal marsala) and the entertainment is nightly. Lunch and dinner daily.
Brix Restaurant & Wine Bar
Contemporary American
Flagstaff, Arizona - 413 N. San Francisco Street, Flagstaff - 928-213-1021 - $$$
Housed in a brick carriage house (circa 1910), this intimate sliver of a restaurant is committed to great wines, great cheese and amazing food, farm fresh and Mediterranean-inflected. The menu changes seasonally but look for duck confit with sweet potato hash, scallops with grapefruit beurre blanc and the awe-inspiring pineapple-upside-down cake. Lunch Tu-F, dinner Tu-Sa.
Cafe ZuZu
American/Contemporary American
Scottsdale, Arizona - 6850 E. Main St. (Hotel Valley Ho) - 480-248-2000 - $$$
This swingin’, earth-toned ode to the ’50s and ’60s effectively captures the look and mood of that era without going overboard. More Dino than Elvis-inspired, it specializes in the homemade foods of that era – meatloaf, mac & cheese, chicken and dumplings, and lemon meringue pie. The best dishes, however, are Chef Chuck Wiley’s modern creations on the appetizer list. Breakfast, lunch and dinner M-Sa, Sunday brunch.
