Dillon’s Grand
American/BBQ
West Valley, Arizona - 19900 N. Remington Dr., Surprise - 623-584-8494 - $$
Overlooking both a lake and golf course, this comfortable restaurant offers friendly service, hearty American food (including chicken-fried steak and catfish) and pecan-smoked ’cue. Lunch and dinner daily.
Fishin’ Hole Restaurant
BBQ/Southern
East Valley, Arizona - 7000 E. Main St., Mesa - 480-324-3474 -
If you love catfish, it’s worth the schlep to this friendly Southern-style restaurant, devoted to fried catfish and barbecue. The ‘cue’s good, but the sweet, crispy catfish fillets are great. Eat them with fried okra and corn fritters. Lunch and dinner daily.
Stacy’s Smokehouse BBQ
BBQ
Phoenix, Arizona - 1650 E. Indian School Rd - 602-230-6724 - $
We can’t say it better than the restaurant’s Website: “Nuthin’ fancy, jus’ good ol’ fashun BBQ!!!” This five-table, bare-bones BBQ joint sits on a busy strip of Indian School Road, just west of Highway 51. Stacy’s may not look like much from the outside – though you’re sure to notice the bright purple paint and graffiti sign – but the wafting smell of smoked meat will hit you from blocks away, luring you into the clean, comfortable space. Owner Stacy Phipps, who ran Stacy's Finest Southern Down Home Cooking in Downtown Phoenix for nine years, smokes his meat in old-fashioned pits using real wood, which gives his beef, pork and chicken the tenderest texture this side of Tennessee. 11 a.m.-9 p.m., M-Sa; closed Sundays. stacyssmokehousebbq.com
