Abuelo’s
Mexican
West Valley, Arizona - 16092 N. Arrowhead Fountain Center Dr., Peoria - 623-878-8282 - $$
Constructed to look like Mexican haciendas, these Texas-based corporate restaurants offer hearty Mexican food with a decidedly Tex-Mex accent. Expect large portions and lots of spice. Don’t miss the fundido del mar appetizer or a side of papas con chile, and save room for chocolate flan. Lunch and dinner daily. Other locations: Chandler (480-855-0960)
Amuse Bouche
French/International
Surprise, Arizona - 17058 W. Bell Road, Ste. 104 - 623-322-8881 - $$-$$$-$$$$
In the tradition of the neighborhood bistro, Paris-trained husband-and-wife chefs Snir and Kierstin Mor turn out unpretentious, homey French fare of exceptional quality. The French onion soup is the real deal and the duck breast with demi-glace is magnifique, but it¹s their carefully crafted meatloaf that takes top prize. The restaurant is BYOB and charges $2 per glass used. 11 a.m.-3 p.m., M; 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.-8 p.m., T-Sa; 9 a.m.-2 p.m. amuse-bouche.biz
Arizona Kitchen
Southwestern
West Valley, Arizona - 300 Wigwam Blvd. (Wigwam Resort), Litchfield Park - 623-935-3811 - $$$
An adobe fireplace and open kitchen add warmth to the Wigwam’s top-tier restaurant, designed to look like an old hacienda. The kitchen makes use of Southwestern ingredients and preparations, offering mesquite-smoked corn chowder and grilled venison with blackberry-Zinfandel-cocoa sauce. Save room for a fun dessert. Breakfast and lunch daily, dinner Tu-Su.
Arrowhead Grill
Steak
Glendale, Arizona - 8280 W. Union Hills Dr., Glendale - 623-566-2224 - $$$
Chef/owner Charles Schwerd’s dad owned a meatpacking business where he worked there from the time he was a kid. Since then, Schwerd has manned the grill for such protein peddlers as Mastro’s, Ruth’s Chris and most recently, John Elway’s Denver steakhouse. He clearly knows his product and processes, and he’s attempting to work them into the west side’s first independent steakhouse, Arrowhead Grill. The menu is tight. While steaks occupy the front burner, there are seafood options and enough hearty appetizers and big salads for picky eaters to craft a lighter meal. 4 p.m.-10 p.m., Su-Th; 4 p.m.-10 p.m., F-Sa. arrowheadgrill.com.
Bistro Bernard
French
Goodyear, Arizona - 14970 W. Indian School Rd - 623-547-0501 - $$$
The West Valley has a diamond in the rough of a French bistro helmed by a gregarious, passionate French chef. In fact, plenty of warmth and hospitality exudes from the staff and especially the chef, who makes a point to visit every table at the end of the meal. Chef/owner Bernard Chirent started his culinary career in his native France in 1968 at the age of 14, eventually owning his own restaurant before coming to the states and working his way up to the top toque at the historic Fairmont San Francisco. Highlights include the signature tomato tartare; croquet monsieur; sautéed Atlantic salmon with beurre blanc and roasted asparagus; and chocolate mousse. 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Tu-Sa; 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Tu-Sa; 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Su brunch.
Bistro di Napoli
Italian
West Valley, Arizona - 5830 W. Thunderbird Rd., Glendale - 602-298-6767 - $$
One of the West side’s best Italians, thanks to friendly servers, excellent food and reasonable prices. Don’t miss the Neapolitan pizzas, the bruschetta with roasted peppers and the Calamari Fra Diavolo. Lunch M-F, dinner nightly.
blu Sushi
Japanese/Sushi
Litchfield Park, Arizona - 118 Old Litchfield Rd - 623-535-4935 - $$$
While not quite yet a “destination” sushi joint to make people travel from afar, blu Sushi is a classy option for west-siders looking for a fun evening out. It has a modern yet relaxed vibe, full of dark wood, candles and an open feel, but with a cozy lounge section if you want to really chill. The place is in the heart of Litchfield Park across the street from the Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa. The owners also own the Wigwam Golf Course, but the businesses aren’t affiliated. Recommendations: Lobster tail roll; gold combination; Las Vegas roll; Golden Gate roll; “rock and roll.” 11 a.m.-10 p.m., daily (kitchen); bar open until at least 11 p.m., Th-Sa
Chanpen Thai Cuisine
Thai
West Valley, Arizona - 13828 N. 51st Ave., Glendale - 602-993-2046 - $$
Wimpy palates need not apply at this homey-looking West Valley operation, where the Thai food is authentic and plenty hot. Try the Pad Prik King, the larb, the curries and the excellent soups for proof. Then cool off with fresh mango and sticky rice dessert. Lunch M-F, dinner M-Sa.
Claim Jumper
American
West Valley, Arizona - 3063 W. Agua Fria Frwy., Phoenix - 623-581-8595 - $$
These California-based restaurants serve up American-style food amid rustic vestiges of the American West. The place is best known for its pot pies, rotisseried chicken and ribs, and the legendary Motherlode chocolate cake – so big it could fit in a shoebox. Lunch and dinner daily. Check the White Pages for other locations.
Cucina Tagliani
Italian
West Valley, Arizona - 7045 N. 59th Ave., Glendale - 602-547-2782 - $$
Exposed brick, weathered doors and grape leaves give this popular West-sider a cozy Old-World feeling. Meanwhile, the made-from-scratch Italian food offers a great value. Customers love the “Pick a Pasta,” first choosing a pasta, then a sauce, then ingredients such as eggplant or prosciutto to add to it. Lunch and dinner daily. Other location: Peoria (623-412-2670)
