Andreoli Italian Grocer
Italian
Scottsdale, AZ - 8880 E. Via Linda - 480-614-1980 - $-$$-$$$
Giovanni Scorzo (of Leccabaffi fame) is large and in charge at this comfy, antique-furnished market-restaurant, where he makes the sort of Italian food Italians want to eat: house-made salumi, focaccia, pizzetta, bresaola, carpaccio, pesce en brodetto and (if you’re lucky) vitello tonnato. The chalkboard offers panini, appetizers and salad but be sure to ask about daily specials. For dessert, the fabulous meringata. Lunch and dinner M-Sa.
Arizona Kitchen

West Valley, Arizona - 300 Wigwam Blvd. (Wigwam Resort), Litchfield Park - 623-935-3811 - $$$
An adobe fireplace and open kitchen add warmth to the Wigwam’s top-tier restaurant, designed to look like an old hacienda. The kitchen makes use of Southwestern ingredients and preparations, offering mesquite-smoked corn chowder and grilled venison with blackberry-Zinfandel-cocoa sauce. Save room for a fun dessert. Breakfast and lunch daily, dinner Tu-Su.
Arrowhead Grill
Steak
Glendale, Arizona - 8280 W. Union Hills Dr., Glendale - 623-566-2224 - $$$
Chef/owner Charles Schwerd’s dad owned a meatpacking business where he worked there from the time he was a kid. Since then, Schwerd has manned the grill for such protein peddlers as Mastro’s, Ruth’s Chris and most recently, John Elway’s Denver steakhouse. He clearly knows his product and processes, and he’s attempting to work them into the west side’s first independent steakhouse, Arrowhead Grill. The menu is tight. While steaks occupy the front burner, there are seafood options and enough hearty appetizers and big salads for picky eaters to craft a lighter meal. 4 p.m.-10 p.m., Su-Th; 4 p.m.-10 p.m., F-Sa. arrowheadgrill.com.

He crafted Avalon’s menu around local and regionally grown ingredients to the Western part of North America.
