Sue Berliner, fitness buff and founder of SWEAT Magazine, has a thing for chocolate. As a reward for sticking to a training regimen, Berliner developed a healthy chocolate confection for her and her friends, and then it dawned on her that she had a viable product to take to market.
Don’t confuse these chocolate drops for truffles; the latter is made with ganache, a rich, velvety blend of couverture chocolate and heavy cream. B Naked Chocolates are a cacao-flavored treat, for sure, but the texture is fudgy-brownie, not creamy smooth.
“The chocolates contain no processed sugar, dairy, gluten or soy,” Berliner says, “and each chocolate is roughly 55 calories.” Compare that with approximately 200 calories in a ganache truffle.
Available in a dozen guiltless flavors, the bite-size chocolates start with a base of organic cacao nibs, raw cashews and a splash of maple syrup. The Naked Truth flavor gets a roll in unsweetened coconut. The Ocean Dive iteration includes chopped almonds and a pinch of sea salt. Wake up your palate with the Slow Burn, spiced with cayenne and rolled in crushed nibs and cinnamon.
Berliner recently added coconut macaroons to her lineup, using unsweetened organic coconut as a base. The macaroons come in a variety of flavors, from the East Indian, scented with orange and cardamom, to the Señorita, flavored with lime.
Find them packaged in eco-friendly craft boxes at the Old Town Scottsdale Farmers’ Market, or order online. Six chocolates (or five macaroons) cost $10.
