Mint Julep

Issue: May, 2012

DRINK THIS.

Every year, spectators at the galloping Kentucky Derby guzzle about 120,000 mint juleps – the Derby’s quaff-of-choice since 1938. If you can’t get to Churchill Downs, don your finest fascinator and hoof it to Mabel’s on Main in Old Town Scottsdale, where they’ll mix up this minty concoction and other Southern-inspired cocktails at their annual Derby party on May 5.

First, Mabel’s mixologists fill the bottom of a traditional silver or pewter cup with crushed ice. Then they muddle four mint sprigs with a bar-spoon of sugar and add a bit more ice so the cup’s about one-quarter full. They stir until the sugar dissolves and add 2 ounces Woodford Reserve whiskey. More ice is added until the glass is three-quarters full; the drink is then stirred until the glass is cold and frosted. Next, the bartenders pack crushed ice on top until the glass is completely full and garnish with two mint sprigs.

During the party, mint juleps will be specially priced at $9. Now that’s a thoroughbred of a deal.
