LOCAL PRODUCT OF THE MONTH

Seven years ago, Lance Anthony was playing around with drying jalapeños to grind into a powder in order to spice up his smoked chicken wings for his annual Super Bowl party. The spicy wings were a huge hit, and someone told Anthony that he should bottle and sell the spice blend – so he did. These days, he uses his Super Bowl-loving friends as a test market for his growing family of chile-based condiments.

He started with the Arizona Jalapeño spice blend but now has a whole line of chile pepper spice blends and flavored salts (available at Whole Foods Valleywide) plus a host of other condiments available through his Website. In fact, his Phoenix Hot BBQ Sauce just picked up a 2010 Scovie Award from Fiery Foods. The spice blends range in heat from mild to hot and in price from $4 to $8.

In addition to the jalapeño spice blend ($6), Anthony bottles several other chile pepper blends, like New Mexican Hatch, chipotle and habañero. He even has a blend called “Faheata,” a play on the lime and garlic marinade used for fajitas. He uses only natural ingredients and no preservatives – not even an anti-caking ingredient.

He may not be able to help your team clinch an NFL Championship title, but at least Anthony can help spice up your Super Bowl party.
