Aspirations of attending medical school next spring propelled Ashley Dewey to start a food business to sock away a little money. She came upon the idea of creating and selling a healthy snack (she is going to be a doctor, after all), and the result is The Healthy Nut granola.
“I really just wanted to put the ‘healthy’ back into granola,” she says. She found most granolas either too sweet or too caloric, so she started with a family recipe and made a few tweaks – like substituting olive oil for generic vegetable oil. Using only organic ingredients and unrefined sugars, The Healthy Nut comes in four flavors.
Dewey and her partner started the company last spring with just two flavors: Oatmeal Cookie and Banana Nut Bread.
Although the heady cinnamon Oatmeal Cookie granola is the best seller, we’re partial to the banana flavor with a milder cinnamon flavor and bits of dried banana. The two other flavors are seasonal – Gingersnap and Pumpkin Pie.
Dewey recently added a protein peanut butter bar to the lineup, with a whopping 15 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber. The three-ounce bars sell for $3 each, or four for $10. The 12-ounce granola bags sell for $6. Her products are available at the Downtown Phoenix Public Market, the downtown Mesa farmers’ market and on the Web.
