Healing Through Poetry: A Benefit Reading for NepalWhen Samyak Shertok heard the news about the April 2015 earthquake that rocked his home country of Nepal, he was “shattered.” Shertok, an Arizona State University alum, works as a visiting poet at the Mayo Clinic, where he writes poems for palliative care patients as “lyric medicine” through Arizona poet laureate Alberto Rios' Poesia del Sol program. Shertok decided to help his fellow Nepalis cope with the destruction in much the same way he's been helping the Mayo patients cope with their illnesses: the healing power of poetry.

Shertok is raising funds and awareness through a Kickstarter and a series of poetry readings. The first was held in July at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe and featured readings by Shertok and Rios as well as an open-mic segment, Nepali snacks and T-shirts and souvenirs for sale. This Friday, August 7, Four Chambers Press will be hosting another reading to benefit the cause, featuring poets Joshua Rathkamp, Rosemarie Dombrowski, Cynthia Hogue and Shertok.

Admission is free, but a $10 donation is suggested.
