Best Swimwear Collection

What Women Want Swimwear
Elise Albert knows what women want in a swimsuit. They want options; they want to feel sexy, comfortable and confident. As the owner of Tempe’s swimwear boutique, What Women Want Swimwear, Albert has helped thousands of women find the perfect suit for their body type. She can give any woman the once over and know the cup size, designer and cut that would work for her. Her shop is the only one in the Valley that welcomes women of all sizes and women looking for a custom-made suit, including women who have had a mastectomy and need a suit designed to hold a breast-shaped prosthesis. Now that’s attention to detail. 1825 E. Guadalupe Road, Ste. 108, Tempe, 480-777-2535, whatwomenwantswimwear.com.

Best Place to Covet Couture

Carole’s Couture
When looking for a statement-making outfit, look to Carole Peterson, owner of Carole’s Couture in Scottsdale. Peterson is known for her fashion-forward sensibility, as well as taking pride in making women feel and look fabulous. The boutique is packed with chic and eclectic clothing from designers such as Vera Wang, Nicole Miller, Chaiken and Robert Rodriguez. Even if you’re not married to any of these labels, chances are you’ll find something uniquely “you,” especially since Peterson keeps her clientele in mind when purchasing pieces for the store in New York City. 16459 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 101, Scottsdale, 480-275-7387, carolescouture.com.

Best Accessories

Frances
What did Valley shoppers do before funky Frances? This hip Downtown Phoenix boutique is full of cool finds that meet the needs of even the pickiest shopper. You can’t go wrong with an embossed leather belt or a one-of-a-kind necklace by Georganne Bryant, the owner of the shop. Whether you’re looking to revamp your entire anthology of accessories or just pull together one outfit, Frances’ collection of vintage-inspired trimmings will do the trick. 10A W. Camelback Road, Phoenix, 602-279-5467, francesvintage.com.

Best Clothing with a Conscience

Sir Alistair Rai
Promoting world peace shouldn’t be a fashion crime, and thanks to Gilbert-based Sir Alistair Rai, it isn’t. Sir Alistair Rai’s funky, Bohemian-meets-rock-star T-shirts, dresses and scarves not only make people look good, they make powerful statements. Some shirts are embellished with simple messages like “think” and “peace,” while others convey a snarky sense of humor with lines like “Barack the Vote” and “Global Warming – That’s Not Hot.” This local line of clothing has even hit it big with socially conscious Hollywood starlets like Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie and Drew Barrymore, who have been seen sporting Sir Alistair Rai pieces. Visit siralistairrai.com for Valley locations.

Best New Boutique

eNhance
Our favorite new Valley boutique will enhance your wardrobe and make you realize how overpriced so many other shops in town really are. eNhance, the Scottsdale boutique next door to Canyon Falls Spa, has only been open a handful of months, but it’s already a raving success. Natasha Finestead, the buyer for eNhance, has had to schedule additional buying trips just to keep the inventory stocked. Women flock to the quaint shop because of Finestead’s impeccable taste and the style options she offers. eNhance caters to women searching to add a little rock ’n’ roll to their wardrobe, a sassy date dress, a stylish addition to the work pile, or a casual afternoon tank. 14891 N. Northsight Blvd., Ste. 121, Scottsdale, 480-998-0333, enhanceboutique.com.

Best L.A. Look-Alike

ICON Fashion Boutique
Nestled near a discount department store and a Burger King, ICON’s location feels nothing like the Sunset Strip. But if the posters of fashionistas like Audrey Hepburn, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwen Stefani in this posh store don’t change your mind, the dresses, tops and accessories will. ICON’s trendy looks scream California style, from funky hoodies from Heatherette, a little-known designer from New York, to patterned tanks by C&C California and Kitson flip-flops that are perfect for the beach (if only we had one). Just be prepared to spend like you’re in California, too – prices range from $30 to $500. 1290 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 111, Tempe, 480-557-0334, iconfashionboutique.com.

Best Designer Jewelry

Beth Church
Each web that Beth Church weaves is one-of-a-kind, eye-catching and dazzling. Church’s jewelry makes statements, making her our favorite local jewelry designer. Her necklaces are the centerpieces of any ensemble. Her belt buckles are like exclamation points. Church incorporates vintage charms, gold, silver and antique chains, beads and gems into her creations, and ladies, you may feel as if you’re carrying around a 5-pound weight, but trust us, it’s worth it. Visit bethchurch.com for Valley locations.

Best Tattoo Parlor

No Regrets
A tattoo parlor’s clients are its best – or worst – advertisements, and No Regrets has the best sales force in Arizona. Ask anyone in the Valley where they got that amazing tattoo, and chances are better than even that they’ll steer you to this Tempe institution. That doesn’t mean it’s the only great tattoo parlor in the Valley (so please, guys, don’t get up in arms). But if you’re looking to take the plunge, the talented artists and professional atmosphere at No Regrets will certainly ease the pain. 1006 W. University Drive, Tempe, 480-967-5200, noregretstattoo.com.

Best Place to Dress Vintage

Mint
Walking into Mint will take you back to the days when dressing up was a game and the props came from grandma’s closet. The vintage hot-spot, located within Red Modern Furniture on Camelback Road, carries vintage swing dresses, pink-beaded flapper dresses, jackets and pants in bright and bold patterns. The walls are lined with decorated hats, jewelry pieces and purses that round off any look. 201 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix, 602-256-9620, iheartmint.com.

Best West-Side Boutique

Haute C Boutique
If you’re a fashionista living west of the I-17, you may be tempted to head for the keyboard and mouse rather than trek to one of the East Valley’s fashion-forward hotspots. But who, then, will ooh and aah at the made-in-heaven fit of those premium William Rast jeans? For the total boutique experience on the west side, head to one of two Arrowhead locations of Haute C Boutique, where owners Claire and Karol Martin have made it their mission to offer West-side men and women big-name brands like Michael Stars, Ben Sherman, Lacoste and Betsey Johnson while providing a personalized shopping experience. 6685 W. Beardsley Road, Ste. 120, Glendale, 623-572-6894; Village at Arrowhead, 20022 N. 67th Ave., Ste. 122, Glendale, 623-376-6316, shophautec.com.

Best Bet for a Used Book

Changing Hands
With its impressive inventory of new and used books; friendly, bibliophilic staff happy to place special orders; newsstand stocked with hard-to-find magazines and journals; full calendar of readings, seminars and signings; and extensive selection of gifts and cards for book lovers, Changing Hands, which turned 33 this year, has long been a quiet Valley favorite. This year, the secret’s out. Changing Hands was named Publishers Weekly’s Bookstore of the Year for 2007, a coveted national honor that is the bookseller’s equivalent to the Oscar. Catherine Zeta-Jones was 33 when she earned her first Oscar. Let’s just hope Changing Hands is never departed. 6428 S. McClintock Dr., Tempe, 480-730-0205, changinghands.com.

Best Place to Buy Wine in the East Valley

T’z Market Place
Not so long ago, the only wine in Chandler and Gilbert was imported – from Phoenix, Scottsdale and other cities that appreciated its retail potential. Thankfully, that’s changing. While there are now a handful of good wine shops in the Southeast Valley, T’z Market Place (formerly known as Devlin’s) is one of the best anywhere. With its great rotating selection and reasonable prices, T’z is the perfect place to pick up a bottle after work or on the way to a party. 58 San Marcos Place, Chandler, 480-857-2088, tzmarketplace.com.

Best-Kept Cheese

La Grande Orange
OK, you have to be a little obsessive about your cheese to appreciate LGO’s commitment to curds. This upscale convenience store doesn’t have the Valley’s largest selection of cheese, or its cheapest. But when you shell out 20 bucks a pound here on Humboldt Fog, you can feel reasonably sure it’s not going to taste like plastic wrap. It’s typical of the attention to detail at La Grande Orange, where everything is done just so. Now, if only this gourmet corner would abandon its boutique approach to parking spaces, it would be perfect. 4410 N. 40th St., Phoenix, 602-840-7777.

Best Ethnic Grocery Store

Ranch Market
One visit to this bright, boisterous mercado, and that skimpy selection of tortillas and beans at your standby grocery store will never cut the mostaza. With four locations in Phoenix, Ranch Markets offer the very finest in authentic Mexican meats, baked goods, produce and groceries. The center of the expansive store is stocked with the basics – detergent, cereals, snacks and beverages – and around the circumference you’ll find every kind of meat, fish, cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, and spices. It’s never good to shop hungry, so stop inside at “La Cocina” for a hefty ranch burrito with frijoles and arroz and a cool agua fresca before you do your shopping. And good luck resisting the impulse-buy Chiclets at the checkout. Visit prosranch.com for hours and locations.

Best Vintage Home Décor

Retro Redux
When it comes to vintage furniture shops, there’s frequently the confusingly cluttered and despairingly spare. Enter Retro Redux, where owners Bradford Fountaine and Ethan Murray have hit just the right note with their well-edited collection of vintage pieces, large and small. They’ve tried to make sure that everyone who visits will find a must-have item, and the eclectic yet well-organized display of furniture, kitchenware, lamps, artwork and accessories holds something from every era at nearly every price point. Pick up a one-of-a-kind sofa that will make even your most IKEA-crazy friends jealous, and have money left over for some kooky kitchen canisters and a disco-licious ceiling lamp. 4303 N. Seventh Ave., Phoenix, 602-234-0120, retro-redux.com.

Best Sewing Supply Store

Fabric World

You’ll also find instructional books, patterns, thread and assorted notions. Visit 35thavesewandvac.com for Valley locations.

Best Way to Beat the Desert Ridge Bottleneck

Segway Tour at JW Marriott Desert Ridge
Navigating the weekend traffic around Desert Ridge Marketplace can make you feel like your SUV’s gone wading in the lazy river at the waterpark – unless you’re high-tailing it past all the idling Escalades in a spiffy Segway Personal Transporter. For just $65, newlyweds Brian and Darcie Lamacchia from the new Segway of Scottsdale offer one-hour guided tours that start at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge and happily venture off the resort’s golf course to give riders a chance to zoom along desert walkways and – if you ask daredevil Brian first – over to the nearby shopping district. 5350 E. Marriott Drive, Phoenix, 480-293-5000 or call Segway of Scottsdale, 623-512-2882.

Best Dirt Bike Shop

Bernie’s Cycle Service
Bernie’s isn’t big or flashy, and if you’re not crazy for KTMs, you probably won’t be buying a bike here. (If you are crazy for KTMs, you probably already know about it.) But this friendly, family-owned shop fills its niche just right. Bernie’s caters to riders from across the state; regulars appreciate its reliable service, expert staff and good parts selection. The shop welcomes browsers, too: Stop by to check out the latest models or just shoot the breeze. 34 E. Southern Ave., Mesa, 480-835-1420, ktmaz.com.

Best Chain Hotel

Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale
Superior service is the Four Seasons’ hallmark, and the Southwest outpost of this ultra-luxe hotel group doesn’t disappoint. But the famous name is almost beside the point at this elegant collection of casitas in the boulder-strewn foothills of Pinnacle Peak. From its impressive collection of Southwestern art to its breathtaking desert views, the Four Seasons Scotts-dale is as unique and distinctive as any resort in the Valley. For locals, it’s the perfect weekend retreat: Leave work on Friday at 5, and you can be sipping cocktails in the Lobby Lounge by 6. 10600 E. Crescent Moon Drive, Scottsdale, 480-515-5700, fourseasons.com/scottsdale.

Best New Service

Gumblasters
Chew on this: All those black spots you see marring the surfaces of sidewalks, memorials and landmarks? It’s all chewing gum, its flavor long gone. Until Gilbert resident Derek Mills sunk his teeth into the problem, the standard treatment for the gooey mess was power washing, which wastes dozens of gallons of water, can damage surfaces and is ineffective at gum removal. Mills’ company, Gumblasters, uses a special environment-friendly steam-cleaning procedure to fully, quickly and economically remove gum from Arizona’s public spaces. Since opening a year ago, Gumblasters’ client list has grown to include Chandler Center for the Arts, Maricopa County Community Colleges, Valley of the Sun YMCAs and Wells Fargo Banks. For more information, call 480-353-1401 or visit gumblasters-az.com.

Best Place to Legally Get Baked

Valla Tanning Retreat

At Valla Tanning Retreat in Chandler, top-of-the-line equipment makes for top-of-the-line tans, whether you’re fond of the high-pressure, high-intensity beds or mist-on booths. And Valla is no run-of-the-mill, fly-by-night salon. Each tanning suite is equipped with an iPod dock, complimentary tanning lotion, personalized Italian towels and personal tanning eyewear, while the lobby is chock-full of designer swimwear and complimentary cappuccino. 3305 W. Chandler Blvd., Ste. 3, Chandler, 480-814-7446, valla-tanningretreat.com.

Best Place to Shed Your Skin

GLOW! Med Spa
Although beauty technology has come a long way, sometimes looking our best requires a bit of discomfort. At the sparkling new GLOW! Med Spa in Glendale, however, it’s well worth it. There, certified laser technicians perform a number of beautifying treatments, including hair removal, chemical peels, Botox injections and ILD, a photo-rejuvenation process using a series of laser treatments. Although the procedure feels as though a thousand flaming rubber bands are snapping against your face, you’ll come away with skin that’s as smooth and freckle-free as a baby’s tush. 6677 W. Thunderbird Road, Bldg. D, Glendale, 623-334-4569, glowmedicalspaaz.com.

Best Spa Outside of Scottsdale

CopperWynd Resort
If you’re sick of Sanctuary, trek 20 minutes northeast to Fountain Hills, where the cozy CopperWynd Resort overlooks the Valley. Ranked as one of the best places to stay in 2007 by the Conde Nast Gold List, CopperWynd is an underappreciated gem, and the Spa at Copper-Wynd lives up to the hype that some of the Valley’s more well-known resort spas receive. With a wide array of massages, wraps, facials, cosmetic enhancements and signature treatments – try the spiritually invigorating Amethyst Body Renewal – seeking solace at this spa should be a must on your summer to-do list. 13255 N. Eagle Ridge Drive, Fountain Hills, 480-333-1900, copperwynd.com.
