Be your own boss with these studious and sharp home office offerings.
“The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.”
Or so said late poet Robert Frost, who ironically wrote his best-known works from the comfort of a home office. There’s something to be said for work done on one’s own terms and turf, and that turf – whether it’s a classic library look or a college dorm-meets-corner-space vibe – says something about its occupant. The desk is the focal point of your office, and since it’s where most people spend their workday, it’s important to find one that’s ergonomic and looks great. For a one-of-a-kind custom artisanal desk, consult the craftsmen at Valley-based Linear Fine Woodworking. The design team is led by third-generation woodworker Allan Rosenthal, one of Phoenix Home & Garden’s Masters of the Southwest for exceptional design. Rosenthal works with exotic woods like ribbon sapele (used in the office unit pictured above) and mahogany chenille to create epic escritoires with detailed inlays and veneers pressed on-site in Linear’s studios. Great care is taken with every detail, and Rosenthal swears he’ll never sacrifice quality for quickness. “We do everything custom from top to bottom,” he says. “We specialize in high-end cabinetry and woodwork.”
Once you’re set on the desk, spruce it up with a wide range of unique home office accessories from Practical Art. The central Phoenix store stocks only handcrafted items made by local artisans, many of which are constructed from reclaimed and found objects. Woodturner Richard Altenhofen frequently uses desert ironwood and olive woods for his line of desk accessories and writing instruments. Husband-and-wife artisans Devin and Lisa Kelley use scrap skateboard decks and parts to create everything from belt buckles to lamps. “Some people rescue aluminum cans,” the couple writes in their artist statement. “We rescue beautiful, once-loved skateboards from landfills.” The fused-glass creations of another couple, Jeff and Marnie Brookins, provide punches of color for any office. “The color, depth and versatility of glass allow us so much creativity,” Marnie Brookins says. “Most of our pieces are functional and designed to bring beauty and fun to everyday items.”
“Fun” isn’t a word often associated with offices. Robert Frost also said, “By working faithfully eight hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work 12 hours a day.” But if your office is comfortable and customized – and right down the hall from your bedroom – “stepping into the office” can be a rewarding and oft-indulged experience.
