Cheech Marin said, “Chicano is where traditional Mexican meets American pop.” And he’s amassed many such aesthetic “meetings.” The actor and arts advocate – best known for playing a stoner in the comedy duo Cheech & Chong and a San Francisco detective opposite Don Johnson on the TV show Nash Bridges – has one of the biggest, broadest collections of Chicano art in the world, with more than 700 paintings alone. The exhibit Take Ten: The Past Decade of Collecting by Cheech Marin consists of 42 works in oil, acrylic, watercolor and glass, by 33 notable Chicano artists including Ricardo Ruiz, Patssi Valdez, Gustavo Alex Vargas, Sonia Romero, Albert Lopez and Eloy Torrez.

Take Ten runs through January 24 at Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main Street in Mesa.

Admission is free. Call 480-644-6500 or visit mesaartscenter.com for more information.
