The artist will conduct his performance-art bout from 6-10 p.m. Aug. 3 at the monOrchid Gallery, 214 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix. Audience members will participate in what he describes as “art therapy” when they cover their hands, feet or a bat in paint and have a go at the punching bags. The end result will be stretched and shown alongside his red, orange and yellow abstract paintings on the walls of the gallery through August.
Zadroga, 30, was born in Costa Rica to American parents and remembers drawing and doodling in lieu of listening at school. He later studied business management at Longwood University in Virginia. A construction gig brought him to Phoenix, where he dabbled in art on the side but never saw it as a viable career path. But when construction work slowed down, his painting picked up. Zadroga began pursuing art with a greater sense of purpose. He joined Artlink Phoenix as a volunteer and started connecting with other artists.
His latest inspiration may be the perfect match for his out-of-the-box approach to art. Like much of his work, the abstract-expressionist punching bag is imbued with real, raw and rich emotion.
“I’m always trying to find a way to evoke emotions on canvas,” Zadroga says. “I’m an emotional guy, and for me art is all about feelings.”
