Knife & Fork Media Group president Susie Timm had her priorities straight for her second visit to Austin to see family this past Christmas. “Instead of seeing the ‘sights’ we mostly focused on eating as much barbecue, tacos and queso as possible,” Timm says. “The ratio of taco to human is near 1:1. There’s more than one taco place per strip center in some spots... It’s an excellent place to visit to enjoy Texas hospitality and truly amazing food.”

“I have been following them on Twitter for years, and I finally got to try Torchy’s,” Timm says. Her favorite dish was the queso: “Hot, spicy, filled with chorizo and outstanding. The brisket tacos were also a winner, and I will try the breakfast tacos next time.” torchystacos.com
Eater Austin calls this city, about an hour from downtown Austin, the barbecue capital of Texas. “Go to figure out for yourself if Kreuz Market or Smitty’s Market has better smoked meat – but don’t ask for sauce or a fork,” Timm says. “I recommend wearing stretchy pants and/or a hazmat suit to combat the volume of meat juice you will end up with on your clothing. “This is the most fascinating place in Texas,” Timm says of the supersize convenience store, which rivals the sprawl and inventory of a Walmart. “They smoke their own meat, sell breakfast tacos, have a huge variety of baked goods and, of course, tons of swag sporting their signature badger logo.” buc-ees.com

Speaking of America’s most famous mega-mart, Timm says it’s “the only place in Austin you can purchase Land O’Lakes white American cheese by the brick... the only cheese worthy enough to make queso at home with. Throw in some ground beef or chorizo, a can of Rotel, an onion or jalapeños if you so desire, and you have a party pleaser.”
