COSMETIC/GENERAL DENTIST

Dental School: University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, DDS with high honors, class of 1994.

Years in Practice: 19 years. I started my own private practice,
Desert Sky Dentistry, in 2003.

What attracted you to cosmetic dentistry?
Actually, I love all aspects of dentistry. However, in regards to cosmetic
dentistry, I enjoy the collaborative relationship with my patients to create the ideal aesthetic appearance. Cosmetic dentistry not only changes a patient's smile, but also changes how the patient feels from within. The patient smiles and laughs more and seems to be more confident. After all, one of the key reasons to become a healthcare provider is to improve a patient's quality of life, and witnessing a patient's joyful reaction always touches me emotionally.

What distinguishes your practice from others?
I think the patient experience is what sets us apart. Our team's objective is to create a welcoming and relaxing office environment and to go the extra mile to meet the individual needs of each patient. Let's be honest, going to the dentist is usually not too high on a person's to-do list. However, numerous patients have overcome their phobia, and many patients have even stated that they look forward to their appointments. From a clinical perspective, I try to adopt a conservative treatment approach that is minimally invasive and maintains as much of a patient's natural tooth structure [as possible]. My goal is to ensure that my patients have a natural and beautiful smile and healthy mouth for their lifetime. Our approach is based on honesty, integrity, and caring. Simply put, our team treats the patient the way we would like to be treated.

Besides brushing and flossing, what should people do to keep their teeth healthy and looking great?
The old adage "prevention is the best medicine" is definitely true. So, schedule regular checkups to avoid more extensive dental work in the future. It also goes without saying that patients should avoid soft drinks, candy and sugary foods in general. I also recommend xylitol-based mints and gum products, because research has shown that xylitol reduces tooth decay. For those patients who don't like to floss, try using a Waterpik, which is an effective water flosser.

Do you work with charitable organizations?
Yes. I work with the Mission of Mercy charity to provide free dental care to people in the Valley who can't otherwise afford it. That experience is both humbling and rewarding.

What was your proudest moment as a dentist?
Four years ago, I became a mentor to other dentists at the world-renowned Kois Center in Seattle. It required numerous years of continuing education that ultimately shaped my comprehensive and conservative approach to dental care.
