DRINK THIS: No. 9 Horchata Cocktail
Cream rises to the top, they say – as old adage that proves deliciously correct in the case of Windsor mixologist Matty Helland’s No. 9 cocktail, a milky-white concoction that beat out a bevy of contenders to win the critics’ pick at the Third Annual Devour Phoenix and Arroyo Vodka Bartending Competition in March. Helland starts with 1 ½ ounces of locally-made Arroyo Vodka infused with coriander seed,
black peppercorn, cloves and cinnamon sticks. He mists the glass with Yellow Chartreuse, adds 3 ounces of almond milk and homemade basmati rice horchata and ice, and garnishes with freshly ground cinnamon.
Helland drew on both his Norwegian and Latino heritage for inspiration, combining the idea of a White Russian with the Mexican horchata rice milk drink. To that, we say, “Skål!” and “Salud!” And to you, we say “hurry” – the cocktail’s available for a limited time only, so try the No. 9 before it gets 86’d. During the off-peak hours between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., you can nab one for $5 (regular price $9).

Ginger ale and ginger beer play supporting roles in cocktail culture, most notably in vintage “bucks” like the Moscow Mule. What’s the difference between the two? Ginger beer is spicier, and was originally brewed from a passed-down...
Though one might expect the world’s top-selling liquor brand to be a mass-produced Russian vodka or American whiskey, South Korea’s Jinro soju actually nabs the booze blue ribbon. Distilled from sweet potatoes or fermented rice, modern so...
Holiday Spiced Manhattan
Despite prominent mention in the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” figgy pudding never quite made it to American holiday tables – perhaps because the fruitcake-like dessert was banned by English Puritans for its alcohol co...
