Cellophane-wrapped hearts and teddy bears are so junior high. Shoot an arrow straight through your lover’s heart with Barrelhouse’s sophisticated Box of Chocolates, a buttery martini sweetened with homemade coconut syrup. Owner Kenta “Ken” Usuzawa’s secret weapon is potent flavored vodka. “You need the extra alcohol to balance the sweetness,” he says. “It’s a win-win!”
Start by boiling 1 1/2 cups of sugar in 3/4 cup water until dissolved. Stir in 3/4 oz. shredded coconut and simmer for 30 minutes. Cool and strain the mixture, then combine 1/4 oz. of the finished syrup with 1 1/2 oz. Absolut Vanilia and 3/4 oz. Dorda Double Chocolate Liqueur. Add 1/4 oz. butterscotch liqueur, 1/2 oz. heavy cream and two dashes Fee’s Aztec Chocolate Bitters. Shake, strain and pour into a chilled martini glass to make some lucky lass (or lad) your Valentine.
