To that end, Calvin recommends interior lights made with exterior finishes for patios, porches and decks. When decorating her own home exterior for holiday parties (the entryway to her house was featured in Phoenix Home & Garden in December 2007 and is pictured left), Calvin follows the flow rule, but architectural limitations of the entryway force her to be innovative with everything from tree-hanging lamps to votive candles. “There are no overhangs, so you can’t hang chandeliers anywhere,” she says. “You have to get creative, so I light the trees, I light around the door, I light the trees above the fountain.”
For a bevy of beacons, consider Scottsdale-based Hacienda Lighting, which carries a cornucopia of fixtures in its 9,600-square-foot showroom, including hundreds of weather-resistant outdoor lighting options ranging from posts and pier mounts to sconces and spot lights. Many of Hacienda’s outdoor lights utilize solar-power or LED bulbs for energy efficiency.
In operation for more than 100 years, family-owned Hinkley’s Lighting in central Phoenix stocks 4,000-plus fixtures, including alfresco luminaries like a three-light wall lantern from Kichler’s Embassy Row collection. “Each fixture not only looks fantastic, but provides a fit and finish that will last for years, as well,” according to Hinkley’s general manager Eric Berkey.
More for looks than light, tabletop fixtures like the Irradia Ethanol Fireplace from Today’s Patio provide a cozy vibe outdoors. “It’s more decorative. It gives a little light, but it’s more like a fancy flower pot,” says Today’s Patio president Steven Ramey, whose company also carries the cutting-edge Serenata Media Center – lights powered by eight LEDs that fit on umbrella poles and include an interface for playing songs from iPods and MP3 players. Perfect for a patio party.
